BANGOR- City councilors voted to rezone two pieces of property to make way for low income housing.
The request for the change was put in by Penquis, who plans to build on them.
The properties are on both sides of the Milford Street Extension, which is the entrance to the Mary Snow School on Broadway.
Residents brought concerns about property value and safety to the meeting.
“50% of our community rents and rent prices keep going up. That’s a huge issue,” explained council chair, Clare Davitt. “We want people to be able to stay where they work. People living outside the community can’t afford to be here. We need to build a sustainable workforce.”
This zone change also passed unanimously through the planning board.
