BANGOR – A home in Bangor was damaged by fire Tuesday evening.
Bangor firefighters were called to a home at 1550 Essex Street after 6:00 p.m.
Authorities believe the fire started in the basement.
“Occupants of the residence noticed smoke coming from the basement. They looked in and saw fire down in the basement,” said Bangor Asst. Fire Chief Greg Hodge. “They immediately exited the building, called 9-1-1. I applaud them for doing that, that’s exactly what you’re supposed to do.”
Crews quickly extinguished the fire, which Hodge says was mostly contained to the basement.
We’re told a cat was killed in the fire.
Hodge says the first and second floors of the home sustained minor damage, and the residents would be unable to spend the night there.
According to Hodge, the home had working smoke detectors.
Hermon, Glenburn and Levant fire departments assisted Bangor Fire Department on scene.
Investigators are still trying to determine an exact cause.
