BUCKSPORT — American Cruise Lines has reversed its decision to visit Bucksport this year.
Tentative plans were initially made to visit 11 times but the number of planned visits was whittled down to three.
Town councilors were scheduled to discuss the issue Thursday night but that no longer is necessary. The Connecticut-based cruise line has canceled all trips to Maine this year.
Rich Rotella, Bucksport’s economic development director, said despite the setback, he is optimistic about the future.
“As you can tell by numbers today, in the state of Maine we’re heading in the right direction,” Rotella said.
“If I had to look into the future, I believe you will see cruise ships, especially American Cruise Lines. They have under 250 passengers. I bet you’ll see them set sail again and Bucksport will be it’s destination,” he said.
The COVID-19 pandemic is preventing cruise ships from operating world wide.
