STACYVILLE – A father and daughter from Connecticut narrowly escaped after their snowmobiles broke through thin ice near Baxter State Park Monday night.
Cpl. John MacDonald of the Maine Warden Service said Brian Sutch, 53, and his 16-year-old daughter, Falen, were traveling on North Twin Lake when their snowmobiles broke through the ice shortly before 7 p.m.
Both snowmobiles quickly became submerged but Sutch and his daughter were able to get themselves out of the water, onto the ice and call 911, MacDonald said.
He said the two were taken to Millinocket Regional Hospital to receive treatment for mild hypothermia. Both have been released from the hospital but their snowmobiles are at the bottom of the lake in about 25 feet of water.
MacDonald said game wardens were at the lake Tuesday trying to determine the exact location of the snowmobiles so plans for removal can begin.
Wardens say even with the recent cold, many lakes and ponds continue to have thin ice. They are reminding everyone to use extreme caution.
