BANGOR – While Mainers are allowed to consume marijuana recreationally, those who wear law enforcement uniforms are not allowed to partake.
That will remains true even when retail sales go into effect in the near future.
Since marijuana — medical or recreational — is still a controlled substance in the eyes of the federal government, it is not permitted, even if officers are off duty.
“If you are a police officer in the state of Maine you can’t use, possess, cultivate or have anything really to do with marijuana,” Sgt. Wade Betters, spokesman for Bangor Police Department.
Stephen McCausland, who is the spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said Commissioner Michael Sauschuck is currently reviewing the policy to ensure it’s up to date.
Public safety encompasses the Maine State Police, Fire Marshal’s Office, Maine Drug Enforcement, gambling control, highway safety, the Maine Criminal Justice Academy and Emergency Medical Services.
