MACHIASPORT – A fire early Thursday evening quickly flattened a shellfish processing business, according to Machiasport Assistant Fire Chief Michael Hinerman.
Hinerman said he arrived at the scene shortly after 6 p.m. and it wasn’t long before the entire building had flames shooting out of the windows and doors.
He said there were two 250-pound propane tanks near the building. Once the tanks’ safety feature kicked in and they began burning off the propane, firefighters were moved away from the building, he said.
According to Hinerman, firefighters watched the fire overnight to make sure it didn’t reignite anything.
He also said the temperature hovering near zero also was a factor in backing away from the burning building.
He said nearly twenty firefighters from four departments helped knock down the fire.
Hinerman says fire marshals were at the scene of the fire Friday and are expected to return Monday for further investigation.
