BANGOR — Some people have already turned on their heat for the season, while others are still holding out.
At some point, we’ll all be cranking up the furnace.
That’s why the Bangor Fire Department wants to remind people to take care of routine maintenance on whatever heating system they may use.
If you have an oil furnace, make sure to get it inspected annually.
For those with fireplaces or wood stoves, keep the chimney clean.
“Just make sure, a wood stove for example, the gaskets are good. It’s a good tight fit and seal,” said Jason Johnson, public information officer for the Bangor Fire Department. “Then simple things like making sure your smoke detectors are in order because this is the start of our busy season in terms of fire safety.”
Johnson said there is a spike in fires around this time of year because of people firing up the furnace.
