PITTSFIELD – Freezing rain caught drivers by surprise last night and caused a pileup on Interstate 95.
In Pittsfield and Palmyra, Maine State Police say nine cars, a wrecker and a tractor trailer truck were involved in a chain reaction crash.
The spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, Steve McCausland, said in a release the northbound lanes were closed for two hours as vehicles were towed from the scene.
The roads were also being treated.
McCausland said the incident started when a car skidded off the road into a median and a tow truck was called to the scene.
As troopers arrived, McCausland said the roads became icy and other cars couldn’t slow down.
Troopers closed I-95 northbound in Pittsfield until the roads could be treated.
McCausland said one driver had minor injuries and was checked at the scene.
