AUGUSTA- Governor Janet Mills has issued an updated executive order for vehicle registration deadlines.
For vehicles purchased before March 15 or whose registration expires before that date, Secretary of State Matt Dunlap recommends you register immediately.
Dunlap says that hundreds of thousands of Mainers had been driving un-registered during the pandemic.
“What we were going through over the last few months is we saw an increasing numbers of vehicles that were on the road that did not have a current registration. It’s about 366,000 of them as a matter of fact,” Dunlap says.
For vehicles purchased between March 15 and May 31, register no later than December 18 2020.
For vehicles purchased from June 1, through September 30, register no later than February 16 of next year
And for vehicles purchased on or after October 1, register as soon as possible, in accordance with Maine motor vehicle law.
“So basically we’re getting back we’re getting back on the regular schedule of registration, so the rolling month of registration. That’s important to make sure you avoid any difficulty going down the road,” Dunlap says.
He added that the deadlines outlined in the new executive order affect motorists whose registrations have expired, or who have purchased a new vehicle during the pandemic state of emergency.
