HERMON – A Hermon High School senior has won first place in a statewide audio essay scholarship competition hosted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Neily Raymond was recognized for her Voice of Democracy audio essay, which involved responding to a prompt about what makes America great.
She said she wrote about veterans — including her grandfather and great uncle.
Raymond first won in her district and then was awarded first place for the state division on Saturday in Winslow.
“I was stunned. I did not expect it at all. When it was me and the second place girl, it was incredible when they called her and I realized that it was me,” Raymond said.
Raymond now moves on to the national finals in Washington, D.C. this spring.
