MT. DESERT – An Ohio man was taken to the hospital via LifeFlight after an accident involving multiple vehicles in Mt. Desert Wednesday.
According to Mt. Desert Police, authorities were called to Route 102 near Echo Lake Road around 5:15 p.m. Wednesday.
Police said a vehicle driven by 35-year-old Caleb Cooperrider of Ohio, was making a bad pass, when it hit an oncoming vehicle then rear-ended another.
In total, the Lt. Kevin Edgecomb said four vehicles were involved. Three of the vehicles were from out-of-state, he said.
Cooperrider was taken to a Bangor hospital via LifeFlight helicopter with multiple injuries.
Police said two more people from Staten Island, New York, were taken to MDI Hospital.
A portion of Route 102 between Somesville and Southwest Harbor was shut down for about three hours as emergency personnel from Mt. Desert, Bar Harbor and Southwest Harbor responded. Maine State Police also were called to the scene.
The accident remains under investigation, but Edgecomb said speed played a factor in the crash, which he called horrific.
