BANGOR — Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor has created an award to honor a special volunteer. The luminary award will bear the name of its very first recipient — Larry Malone.
Malone began volunteering at Northern Light Rehabilitation after a shoulder injury.
After seeing the benefits of the program, Malone accumulated nearly 3,000 volunteer hours over his years of service.
“It wasn’t something that he sought out so it was through their care and their relationship with them that he felt he could give that back,” said the volunteer’s son, also named Larry Malone.
The elder Malone died earlier this year but in a letter to rehab employees, he once wrote: “I don’t make money here but I am the richest man around by just having all of you as my friends. One cannot put a price on friendship — you have given me purpose — a purpose to get up every morning and keep on living.”
