ELLSWORTH – Members of the Huntington’s Disease Society of America’s New England region are hosting a fundraising event on Sunday called the Maine Team Hope Walk.
Huntington’s disease is a genetic and fatal brain disorder that takes away a person’s ability to walk, talk or think.
Nancy Patterson, the society’s Maine affiliate chair, said the walk hits close to home to her because Huntington’s disease runs in her family.
The event is happening rain or shine Sunday at Ellsworth High School. Registration opens at 9 a.m. and the walk starts at 11 a.m.
“The best thing about it is everybody coming together like a big family. We are lifting each other’s spirits and celebrating help for today and hope for tomorrow,” Patterson said.
All money raised will support advocacy, education and research to find a treatment and cure.
