MOUNT DESERT ISLAND – Island Explorer buses have wrapped up another season of transportation around Mount Desert Island, Trenton and the Schoodic Peninsula.
Ridership has increased by 4 percent since last year.
Paul Murphy, executive director of Downeast Transportation, said buses ran six days longer than last year.
However, the company is still up by 1 percent based on the same amount of days as last summer.
This year, Murphy said, the company got 20 new buses to replace older ones.
“Park visitation keeps growing. The park is in the middle of implementing its new transportation plans and that plan envisions growth for the project so likely we’re going to grow again,” he said.’
Murphy hopes they will continue to grow next season with the addition of eight new buses.
Downeast Transportation is now hiring bus drivers to drive the new buses for next season.
