JONESPORT – A Dutch seafood company hopes to build a land-based fish farm in Jonesport.
Representatives from Kingfish Zeeland met with residents Wednesday night to discuss their plans for a $110 million yellow-tail aquaculture facility.
Jonesport selectman Harry Fish says the majority of people seem very excited about the opportunity it will bring to the town, one that relies mostly on lobster fishing for its economy.
“This is the first time that something has proposed to arrive in our area where young people can go and find a good paying job that’s long term that will have benefits and pay, and I expect if this goes through that this company will be here for a long time, so it can almost be a lifetime job,” Fish said.
Fish says the company plans to employ 60 to 70 people.
He says if the permitting process goes smoothly, Kingfish Zeeland officials told them they could start construction in 2021 and it would take about a year to build the fish production facility.
