ELLSWORTH – Valentine’s Day is just days away and the Bud Connection is going into its 13th year of business for the holiday. Preparations for the big rush are well underway.
“There isn’t anything you do in a flower shop that you can’t pre-prep for this week just to keep the flow of everything moving,” said owner Barbara Courchesne.
The Bud Connection is a one-stop shop where people can grab everything from bouquets to cards — even Courchesne’s famous Needhams, or a box of hand-selected assorted chocolates.
“We sell it by the pound. So we have about 60-65 flavors this year. So you can pick all of your truffles or you can pick one or buy one of each one,” Courchesne said.
Courchesne’s refrigerator is filled with about 7,000 flowers. She said that this week she expects to make between 600 and 700 arrangements and come Friday she anticipates making about 400 deliveries.
Nationally, Valentine’s Day is one of the biggest holidays for florists, according to Katie Butler, senior vice president of the Society of American Florists.
“Valentine’s Day is actually the No. 1 holiday for florists in terms of percentages in transactions,” Butler said.
In fact, the National Retail Federation expects spending for Valentine’s Day to total $27.4 billion — up 32 percent from last year.
Both Courchesne and Butler urge people to shop local. Courchesne said her shop will be open late Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
