BANGOR – The Covid-19 pandemic has certainly made doing the things we normally do more difficult.
And going to the gym is no exception.
The staff at the Wilcox gym in Bangor have been able to overcome the obstacles.
The Wilcox Wellness & Fitness Center is adapting to the times.
While some gyms have shut down completely, owners of the fitness center have found alternative ways to engage their clients.
Virtual training sessions are part of their “new normal”.
“So we we’re doing zoom sessions and we were able to get our client’s to reluctantly buy-in but as soon as they got into it and realized you know what it’s really similar, the coach is still there and it’s just phenomenal so far,” said Co-Owner, Mike Wilcox.
After the virtual sessions, staff members transitioned to group outdoor sessions.
This allows for everyone to socially distance in an outdoor setting.
Wilcox added “With all kinds of space for client’s to be able to train. We got some music out there and we’ve been out there for 6 weeks now so we offer 3 to 4 sessions a day outdoors and we make it work.”
In addition to virtual and group sessions, Wilcox says the fitness center offers individual sessions as well.
The gym is following C-D-C guidelines by implementing strategies to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
Masks are required in the gym and it’s important to wipe down the equipment after using it.
Wilcox says exercising is much more than physical transformations.
“Really I think the most important part of being physical and being active is the confidence you have taking care of your health as well as stress relief from everything that is going on right now.”
His passion for fitness isn’t new.
Wilcox grew up an athlete and the field and the court is where he learned how to be a leader.
“As a point guard it’s kind of interesting you’ve got to know where everyone needs to be. Where they’re going next or in 3 or 4 steps or whatever it may be. I think I’ve honed my skills in a group environment and can teach those things to other people because I had so many years. It’s setting people up for success.”
Success at the Wilcox Wellness & Fitness center is not only defined by how you look but how you feel.
Personal Trainer and Coach Katie Norwood had some inspirational words: “I think that whenever life throws us challenges it’s really good to fight back and prove Covid-19 wrong and continue to fight through it mentally and physically.”
