HERMON – A Hermon High School senior got first place in a state wide audio essay scholarship competition, hosted by the VFW.
Neily Raymond was recognized for her audio essay entered in the VFW’s “Voice of Democracy” program. This time around, participants had to answer a prompt about what makes America great.
She said she wrote about veterans, including her grandfather and great uncle.
Raymond first won for the district, and then was awarded first place for the state division on Saturday in Winslow.
“I was stunned, I did not expect it at all,” she said about the moment she won. “When it was me and the second place girl it was incredible when they called her and I realized that it was me.”
Not only did Raymond get scholarship money, but in a couple months she will be in the national finals in Washington, DC.
