BANGOR – Maine astronaut and Caribou native Jessica Meir got a chance to share her experiences aboard the International Space Station with students at Brown University on Thursday.
Meir graduated from Brown as part of the Class of 1999.
Via video downlink from the space station, about 250 miles above Earth, Meir took questions from students and members of the public alike.
An aspiring astronaut asked Meir if she ever thought she would be where she is now when she was a student at Brown.
“Ya know, I knew I always wanted to be an astronaut but I didn’t think it was necessarily going to come true, and we all know this but it’s a small chance of this happening,” Meir said.
“For anybody, no matter how qualified you are, there’s a lot of luck involved ’cause there are a lot of other people that are equally as qualified and deserve to be here, too, but unfortunately it’s a lot of luck and numbers game in the end,” she said.
Students also got a chance to talk with Jessica about her long history of involvement in space exploration.
