SEARSPORT- Nearly 3 dozen people were at Searsport Congregational Church on Wednesday night for a town hall meeting with Senate President Troy Jackson and Senator Erin Herbig.
“It’s about talking about some of the things we’ve been working on in the state legislature that effect people in Waldo County on a daily basis, but it’s also for us to listen,” Herbig said.
At the meeting, the senators reviewed the Fighting for Maine Agenda, an outline on how they plan to improve the lives of Mainers during the next session.
“The things I‘m hearing from folks in Waldo County is we need broadband internet expansion,” Herbig continued. “We need reliable high speed internet in rural Maine and that’s one of the things we’ll be talking about tonight.”
They also addressed what’s already being done to remedy some concerns people have brought forward at these meetings.
“Something new this session we’re going to be putting forward is a healthcare commission where people can call and make sure they get their healthcare questions answered, which is a constant problem,” Jackson said.
Other issues they plan to address this session include job growth and property tax relief.
“You get some of your best ideas by going out and hearing directly from your constituents. None of us know the issues back in forth,” Jackson said. “If you’re not willing to actually go talk to people and get a better feel for it, you shouldn’t be in office.”
This was the sixth town hall meeting held by Maine Democrats in recent months.
