STATEWIDE (WGME) – A record number of people are filing for unemployment in Maine and now the Maine Department of Labor is rolling out a new system to help answer people’s questions.
Starting Monday, the department will use an alphabetical call-in schedule.
On Monday, people seeking to file for unemployment with the last name starting with the letter A though H should call.
Tuesday is the day for those whose surnames begin with N through Q and those whose last names start with R through Z should call on Wednesday.
Thursday and Friday are open for anyone who may have missed their slot.
Officials said they hope to have 100 people answering calls and helping with the process by the end of this week.
“We’re just hoping that by separating it out by day like that, that more people will be able to get through on the phones and speak to a representative,” said department spokeswoman Jessica Picard.
The Maine Department of Labor reminded wants to remind you — you can also file for unemployment 24-7 online.
Officials say they are going to see how this process works this week — and go from there.
