PORTLAND (WGME) – A Portland man who shot and killed the mother of his three children will spend 40 years behind bars.
Anthony Leng, 42, wiped away tears Monday as he learned his sentence.
In January of 2018 Leng shot and killed 36-year-old Sokha Khuon at the home they shared in Portland.
Prosecutors said Leng tried to make it look like Khuon attempted to stab him, but they characterized the shooting as an execution that Leng carried out without warning while two of the couple’s children were in the home.
Kim Grant, a friend and neighbor of the victim, spoke to the court, saying Khoun had told her she was trying to get away and she wished she could have done more.
“It’s not a day that goes by that i don t think about what happened. Sokha reached out for me for help and I helped, and I should’ve done more, and I know there are limits in what can be done in sentencing today, but there is no justice today. No matter what,” Grant said.
Leng did not speak before his sentence but the defense read a letter from him apologizing and accepting responsibility for the crime.
Leng avoided a trial that would have taken place later this month by pleading guilty to murder.
The agreement capped his sentence at 40 years.
