BANGOR — It’s been nearly four years since voters gave the green light to retail sales of recreational marijuana. Now, that will be permitted beginning in October.
According to a statement from the Office of Marijuana Policy Friday afternoon, the first recreational marijuana licenses will be issued on Tuesday, Sept.
Mainers will have to wait until Oct. 9 before they can legally purchase marijuana from a storefront.
OMP Director Erik Gunderson said sales could have started months ago, but the COVID-19 pandemic stalled the process.
He said the gap between licenses being issued and sales being allowed gives growers time to harvest and prepare the marijuana for sale.
