BANGOR – A Bangor man accused of threatening to burn down someone’s house and creating a police standoff appeared before a judge Friday.
33-year-old Matthew Gormely was arrested on six charges, including criminal mischief, terrorizing and creating a police standoff.
He’s also been charged with Class C criminal threatening, which is a felony, so he was not asked to enter a plea.
Bangor police say Gormely made a threat with a can of gasoline, then refused to leave his residence when authorities arrived to question him about the incident.
During his court appearance, prosecutors requested a mental health evaluation for Gormely.
“The state was concerned that there was a mental health aspect of the case that needed to be addressed, so that’s why we made the request,” said Penobscot County Assistant District Attorney Mark Rucci.
Bail was set for Gormely at $5,000 cash.
