BANGOR – Two local men, Joseph Johnson and Cote Choneska, made their first appearance in a Bangor court Friday.
Police said 30-year-old Johnson of Old Town and 39-year-old Choneska of Veazie were charged with the murder of Berton Conley.
Both were arrested Wednesday and taken to the Penobscot County Jail.
On Nov. 1, firefighters were called to 258 Essex Street shortly before 8 a.m., Bangor police said.
There they found 59-year-old Conley unconscious. Police said he was pronounced dead at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center.
Carrol Conley remembered the life of his brother, Bert, and the impact he had.
“He’d give his shirt off his back. He constantly had people in this home and other homes. People that were struggling and need a couch to sleep on or something his door was open to those people,” Carrol Conley said.
According to the medical examiner, Conley’s death was determined to be a homicide.
“That would leave the issue of bail which is states position in this case,” said Superior Court Justice William Anderson.
Anderson determined Johnson and Choneska will be held without bail.
