BANGOR – May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and Director of Integrated Behavioral Health at Bangor’s Northern Light Acadia Hospital Jesse Higgins is reminding people how important it is to advocate for their own mental health.
According to Higgins, a lot of people are dealing with mental health issues right now with the current state of the world.
She said some responses may be normal, but if it starts interfering with life, it is important to seek help.
“A lot of people are having a hard time right now, particularly with social distancing because their usual coping skills aren’t necessarily available to them,” Higgins said. “You can’t go out to a restaurant necessarily or get together with your support people, so I think we’re more likely to notice that we need help.”
Higgins said resources are more accessible than ever before with the ability to meet over video chats and phone calls.
