MILBRIDGE- A number of lighthouses on Main Street in Milbridge are helping generate excitement for changes that will soon be coming to the town.
Changes are coming to Downtown Milbridge with the resurrection of a historic landmark.
“We presented a concept that would have three benefits for the community. It would help get exposure to our local artists, we have a lot of amazing talent here in Milbridge and in our surrounding area. It would bring visitors and recognition in Milbridge trying to boost downtown, bring visitors for the economy and our local businesses. And we can use it as a fundraiser to help rebuild Milbridge Theatre,” Gateway Milbridge Chairman Richard Bondurant said.
They used public grants and donation funds to purchase the existing theater building and land.
In addition, they bought ten different seven-foot-tall lighthouses for local artists to illustrate for the community.
The works have been on display for the last two weeks throughout the town, and now the lighthouses will be up for auction.
“Our plan is to actually start bidding through an online auction probably this coming weekend and let that run for a week and then that will transition to a live auction itself, a silent auction at 6 pm on Friday, the 23rd of August,” Bondurant said.
One of the artists said the lighthouse styles vary from abstract to realistic .. And they’re all unique, which she said reflects the uniqueness of the town.
A member of Gateway Milbridge said the community response for the rebuilding of the theatre has been greater than expected.
“We hope it means the same thing that it did for generations of families in Milbridge, it was the hub of activity, not only for Milbridge but it drew from surrounding communities and towns. It was a meeting place on Friday nights, it was entrainment, arts, movies it was really what to do in this town,” Gateway Milbridge board member Cathy Chipman said.
Ground breaking is scheduled for the fall.
