MILLINOCKET – Millinocket residents created a petition following grievances filed against Police Chief Craig Worster regarding the town’s response to the complaints.
“We’re just a group of concerned citizens that want to make sure that things are, that the citizens are heard because nobody seems to be listening,” said Jennifer Murray, a concerned citizen.
The complaints against Worster were filed by Deputy Chief Janet Theriault, who claimed Worster created and fostered a hostile work place.
The petition calls on the town council to replace the town attorney, remove the town manager and place the police chief on administrative leave and the assistant chief on paid administrative leave until legal matters are resolved.
“This is a legal thing,” said Susan D’Alessandro, organizer of the Katahdin Citizens Facebook group. “Just the harassment part alone, is you know, there’s a lot of legal rules to this. And, how can this still be going on after seven months?”
Murray said the town manager and council are not doing enough, despite citizens expressing concerns at meetings and protests.
“The amount of money that we’re spending for legal fees, settlements, arbitration is, we can’t afford it.” Murray said. “We live in a very small community that we don’t have a lot of fat in our budget.”
Town Manager John Davis said they are following a process.
“It’s unfortunate we got ourselves into an ordeal with an issue that we have a process, to take care of, because people have been a little impatient,” Davis said. “I guess I don’t blame them for that, but you know, when we can come out and talk about it, we’ll do so.”
The group planned a drive up event Wednesday night to allow people to sign the petition.
Signatures will be collected until the next council meeting on Aug. 13.
“We are looking to get as many as we possibly can, but honestly, I don’t think that we’re gonna have much of a problem,” Murray said.
Lorne Smith of Teamsters Local No. 340 sent a letter to the town council Wednesday asking them to investigate Davis and to open discussions about the allegations against Worster.
Attempts to reach Worster for comment were unsuccessful.
