PISCATAQUIS COUNTY – A 70-year-old lost hunter has been found safe after spending a night in the woods in northern Piscataquis County.
Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife spokesperson Mark Latti says Maurice Pelletier of Caribou went bird hunting alone on Wednesday and got out of his vehicle to shoot a grouse.
Latti says Pelletier followed a second bird into the woods and became disoriented.
According to Latti, Pelletier made a fire to stay warm and hunters discovered his jeep with the engine still running Thursday morning.
They contacted the Maine Warden Service.
Wardens were able to find signs of Pelletier and called in a plane to help with the search.
Latti says Pelletier heard the plane and was trying to build a fire in an open area to signal it when they found him.
He says if Pelletier had not been so prepared it could have had a much worse outcome.
