CHARLESTON – A couple of inmates at Mountain View Correctional Center are asking to be released to home confinement until the coronavirus pandemic is over.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Maine filed a federal lawsuit on behalf of inmates Joseph Denbow and Sean Ragsdale claiming the are medically vulnerable and the prison is not doing enough to protect them from the virus that has killed more than 100,000 people in the United States.
“Physical distancing is impossible in Department of Corrections facilities so for people who are most medically vulnerable to the disease, we’re asking that they need to be considered for transfer. Safe transfer to the community so that they can perform physical distancing there,” said ACLU of Maine attorney Emma Bond.
Bond said the ACLU lawyers also are asking the judge to issue a blanket ruling to cover other inmates who are medically vulnerable.
Judge John Woodcock is expected to make his ruling shortly.
