SKOWHEGAN – The investigation into what caused employees at the Skowhegan New Balance factory to become sick Thursday is ongoing.
The factory was closed Friday following Thursday’s incident, according to a statement from Raye Wentworth, New Balance Maine Regional Manufacturing Lead.
Nearly 70 employees had to go through a decontamination process after being exposed to some sort of irritant that caused shortness of breath and burning in their eyes.
Friday, a Skowhegan firefighter confirmed the chief was still working with representatives from New Balance and other agencies to determine what happened, and would hopefully be able to provide more details on the investigation on Monday.
In a statement, Wentworth thanked first responders for their help ensuring the employees were safe.
Wentworth told WVII/WFVX the factory was expected to reopen after the weekend, and said “we are grateful for the support and cooperation we have received during this challenging situation.”
