ORONO – The University of Maine is collaborating with Diamond Offshore Wind and RWE Renewables to create a new partnership called New England Aqua Ventus, LLC (NEAV).
According to President of the University of Maine at Machias Joan Ferrini-Mundy, as the partnership develops, the floating offshore wind technology the university has produced will be implemented.
Chris Wissemann of Diamond Offshore Wind said the goal is to make floating offshore wind a reality for the state of Maine to create jobs and make Maine self-sustainable.
He said it’s being done in a way so offshore wind, fisheries and other maritime uses can coexist.
“We hope that people get that out of this inspiration. That’s number one,” Wissemann said. “Number two is an understanding of offshore wind and so that it’s understood that it can live with other uses in the ocean.”
The Department of Energy provided a grant of about $36.9 million for construction, and Diamond and RWE will invest the balance needed, which is estimated to be $100 million.
They expect to be operational by the summer of 2023.
