ORONO – The local police department would like to hire two new police officers and is offering an incentive to attract possible candidates.
They are giving a cash bonus to those who are hired and take on a full-time position.
“Last week we received approval from the town council to kind of continue to offer a $10,000 signing bonus as an incentive for current full-time police officers who have been through the academy,” said Chief Josh Ewing, of the Orono Police Department. “[It’s] kind of as an enticement to maybe take a look at Orono and perhaps think about working for us.”
The department has used the bonus two times in recent history to attract new hires, the chief said.
One was a Maine Criminal Justice Academy graduate who used the money to pay off his schooling, and the other one went to an officer with a few years of experience, he said.
