OLD TOWN – Police and first responders spent most of Tuesday trying to make contact with a man suspected in an assault in Old Town.
Around 3:00 Tuesday morning, police got a call about a person attempting to hurt themselves.
Police later learned the suspect allegedly assaulted someone at Pembroke Pines, then fled the scene.
Tuesday morning, Old Town residents were asked to stay indoors as authorities searched for the man.
Authorities from various agencies attempted to locate the suspect, who eventually stranded himself on a rock in the middle of the Penobscot River.
Around 3:00 p.m., about 12 hours after the incident began, authorities were able to reach the man, who was taken to shore in a warden service boat to be evaluated.
Bystanders surrounded the area and Mac Herling, a social worker, had some thoughts on the situation
“I don’t know the gentleman at all, but I hope they can get him the help that he needs,” Herling said. “And if there are some crimes involved, that they can address those in a thoughtful way.”
Police say charges are pending at this time, and once the man is formally charged, his identity will be released.
