BREWER – A 12-year-old beagle staring from inside his cage at the Bangor Humane Society captured the heart of a 9-year-old Brewer boy.
Matthew Gross adopted the dog, named him “Buddy” and started the “Ride for the Wet Nose” as a way to give back to the animal shelter that brought the two together.
Fast forward eight years to Friday, when he and his dad took the 22.5-mile fund-raising journey, they say, for the last time.
“This year, we ended up raising about $2,000,” Gross said Friday, standing inside Pat’s Bike Shop in Brewer, where the ride begins and ends. “We tried to keep it under the radar but people just kept finding out about it. In totaln we’ve raised about $19,000 over eight years.”
Gross started the ride as a Brewer Community School sixth grader. This year, he’s a senior at Brewer High School and plans a life in public service.
A portion of the funds this year also will benefit the Old Town Animal Orphanage.
