HERMON – There are 25 days until Maine’s election and health care is one of Sara Gideon’s top issues.
As we enter the final weeks of Maine’s competitive senate race, Sara Gideon held a town hall to highlight the need for affordable health care.
Gideon made her pitch for her “Health Care is on the Ballot” campaign in her battle against republican U.S. Senator Susan Collins.
“When we think about the fact that Susan Collins has voted to undermine or repeal the Affordable Care Act multiple times, we need to know that we’re electing a senator who is going to fight and protect and expand our health care and that’s why I’m running for senate,” said Sara Gideon, democratic U.S Senate candidate.
According to Gideon, the U.S. Supreme Court is expected to hear a case which might reverse the Affordable Care Act shortly after the election.
This action could allow insurance companies to charge more to people with pre-existing health conditions.
Some local residents believe better health care coverage is needed in the state of Maine.
“It’s important that this is available for all the citizens in our state and the country,” said Mike Maybury, local resident.
The Democratic Senate candidate supports a similar plan to the Medicare program to make health care more accessible for Mainers.
Gideon said the federal government needs to lower prescription drugs prices, strengthen and protect reproductive health care and fight the opioid epidemic.
“To make sure we save health care, and make it stronger. To make sure social security is here for our seniors and generations to come. To make sure we are doing things to expand access to education, and to get us all through COVID-19 and this public health crisis so we can rebuild our economy,” said Gideon.
