STATEWIDE – The 2020 election is 83 days away. Secretary of State Matt Dunlap said more Mainers are currently registered as Democrats than Independents for the first time since he’s been in office.
He thinks this is because people wanted to vote in the presidential primary back in March.
According to Dunlap, if you register for a party, you must stay a member of that party for a minimum of three months.
He said the state of Maine has close to a 98% registration rate, but it’s important to make sure people are registered to vote where they live.
“What we see happening with registration commonly is people move, and they need to update their registration,” Dunlap said. “You don’t choose where you vote, you choose where you live, and then you register to vote from there.”
Election Day registration is available, but Dunlap said they are encouraging people to register ahead of time.
