WASHINGTON, D.C. (AP) – Senator Susan Collins is officially running for re-election.
The republican formally launched her bid for a fifth term in office Wednesday, setting up what is expected to be the most expensive political race in state history, according to the Associated Press.
She told supporters in an email that her “bipartisan commonsense approach” is important in an era of bitter partisanship.
The popular moderate republican is seen as vulnerable by democrats.
And the race comes against a backdrop of impeachment inquiry in which Collins could be forced to make a dramatic vote on President Donald Trump.
Democrats have attacked Collins for her votes for Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh and the GOP tax cut.
Collins has been representing Maine as a U.S. Senator since 1997.
