NATIONWIDE – Sen. Angus King, I-Maine, has co-sponsored legislation to create a three-digit suicide hotline.
The bill designates 988 as the number for a national suicide prevention and mental health crisis hotline.
It would replace the current 10-digit numbers.
A statement from King said the extra digits create an additional barrier to anyone needing help .
King said the easier to remember number will make it easier to save lives.
According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Maine lost 274 people to suicides in 2019.
