SWANVILLE- Saturday, Swanville residents voted on the fate of the Swan Lake Dam.
Right in the Swanville Town Hall parking lot, people gathered to decide whether they supported town officials purchasing the Swan Lake Dam from Goose River Hydro Incorporated.
“The vote was quickly disposed of. It was actually a unanimous vote, there were no objections and it happened quickly and was positive. It seems like everyone that was there was very happy that it was voted on and approved,” said the treasurer of the Swan Lake Association, Bill Baxter.
During the vote, dozens gathered to had their input heard.
” A lot of people that were there were probably residents of the town and as well as people who lived in houses on the lake. It was good to see what was probably a mix of both of those residents there,” he said.
He added there would have been consequences for the town’s tax revenue if the vote didn’t go through, as goose river hydro had plans to sell the dam to out of state investors who would have demolished it.
“The town owning the dam stabilized those property values and have that control for years to come,” he said.
He added all of the resident’s work is done, and now the town will assume ownership of the dam and take on any maintenance of the dam’s operations.
