CLINTON – A tragic accident in Kennebec County on Sunday left three people dead, all of them under the age of 18.
The single-vehicle crash happened shortly after 7 a.m. on Hinckley Road, according to a Maine State Police spokesman
Police have identified the victims as a 15 year old, 14 year old and 12 year old. They all died at the scene.
Another 12 year old and the driver, a 16-year-old Clinton boy, were taken to the hospital with injuries that were not considered life threatening.
State police said the car struck an icy patch on the road, went into an uncontrolled skid and struck a large tree.
“This is really a tragic event, a tragic incident not only for the families involved but for the first responders who had to respond here and for the Clinton community as a whole. Our condolences and thoughts and prayers are out there with the families,” Maine State Police Lt. Jason Madore said at the crash scene.
Police said it appeared speed and driver inexperience were factors in the crash. The teenage driver did not have a driver’s license.
A section of Hinckley Road was closed down Sunday morning because of the accident.
