BANGOR — A local man was arrested Thursday night after he allegedly stole a backpack from a State Street address and refused to stop when confronted about it, according to Bangor police.
Police initially were called to Union Street near Columbia Street for a reported robbery shortly before 9 p.m., Bangor police Sgt. Wade Betters said Friday in a news release.
Officers who responded found the person who called for help being attacked the suspect, 39-year-old local transient Ricky Hendsbee, in the middle of the street, Betters said.
He said officers intervened and stopped the attack, then took Hendsbee into custody.
An investigation revealed Hendsbee’s victim had just caught him in the act of burglarizing 72 State St., Betters said.
“Hendsbee refused to stop when confronted by the complainant, then walked off with a backpack, allegedly filled with items from 72 State Street,” Betters said. “The complainant followed Hendsbee and at one point, Hendsbee allegedly knocked a phone from the complainant’s hand to prevent being photographed.”
Hendsbee, who has several sets of bail conditions, was taken to Penobscot County Jail. He’s been charged with Class B felony robbery and violation of bail conditions.
