UNITY – Unity College Distance Education is starting two new online undergraduate degree programs designed for adults.
The programs Animal Health and Behavior and Environmental Science and Climate Change are being added.
“We have a national draw. 75 percent of our kids are from out of state,” said Unity College President Melik Peter Khoury.
“So really capitalizing on that brand awareness as America’s Environmental College but offering it to adults. It’s giving opportunities to adults who would never think this is something they could do,” he said.
Right now Unity College has almost 250 students from around the world taking online classes.
“These just build on an already successful online program here at Unity College,” said Vice President of Distance Education Amy Arnett.
Khoury said these programs are designed specifically for working adults or people looking to change careers. Students will take one course every five weeks.
“The career options are very rich and that’s one of the reasons that we’re really putting a lot of time and energy into developing these because there are great opportunities for our students and that’s really what we’re focused on,” Arnett said.
They said these two new programs align perfectly with the mission of Unity College.
“Our mission is to train the next environmental leaders of the world with a focus on sustainability,” said the Dean of Environmental Conservation and Research Pieter deHart.
“Looking at environmental issues and understanding climate change is woven in and throughout all of our courses, all of our degree programs and making sure that we’re training the next generation to understand the issues as well as work collaboratively to solve those,” he said.
Arnett said 60 percent of people wanting to get a bachelors degree in the country are not the typical college age.
These new programs allow anyone to further their education.
“There’s a lot of community building and networking through online learning and it works with an adult audience that have full time lives, family, work, you can get this degree on top of all those other obligations,” Arnett said.
“We work with you to reach your dream,” she said.
