MORRILL – A man from Belmont was killed Wednesday morning when a dump truck and a car collided.
Maine State Police say 34-year-old Nicholas Day died in the collision that happened on Route 3 near the Searsmont/Morrill town line. The dump truck driver, 31-year-old Eugene Hyde of Wilton, suffered minor injuries.
“At about 7:48 this morning, troopers received a call of a serious injury accident where a passenger car crossed the center line and went head-on into a loaded dump truck,” Cpl. Jeremiah Wesbrock of the Maine State Police said at the scene. “We’re withholding the names of the trucking company and of the people, the driver of the car. I will say the driver of the car is deceased at this point.”
The names were released at around 4 p.m. Hyde was driving for C.H Stevenson based in Wayne.
The state police commercial vehicle enforcement and traffic safety units conducted the reconstruction, Wesbrock said.
The state police press release states the investigation continues, and adds at this point speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash.
The roadway was closed for around 8 hours.
