BELFAST – As families continue to struggle financially due to the pandemic, Waldo County hosted its fourth round of food distribution to help the community get by.
Starting at 7 a.m. Friday, Belfast Soup Kitchen and other organizations have been unpacking trucks to distribute 2,305 boxes of healthy food to families.
“These boxes have 12 pounds of produce, five pounds of dairy, and five pounds of meat in them. And they get a gallon of milk with it also,” said Cherie Merill, executive director of Belfast Soup Kitchen.
This is the fourth USDA Farms to Families food effort in Waldo County.
Merrill said last Friday’s distribution was the busiest.
Other organizations helped give out the food to families.
Dawn Bryant of the Waldo county Community Action Partners said there has been a growing need for food aid within the community.
“I’m not sure if it’s awareness or need but one thing for sure is the reason we are doing an extra day of food distribution today because there has been a such a community demand,” said Bryant.
According to Bryant, this will be the last distribution of the season.
However, the Belfast Soup Kitchen will be providing more meals daily for those in need.
“People are looking to put fuel in their tanks and figure out how they are going to heat their houses, so food sometimes ends up on the bottom of the list and we need to do this to help people get through this,” said Merill.
