BANGOR- The Maine Warden Service wants to remind people about some safe boating tips.
While Maine has no laws specific to boat capacity, most boats come with a capacity plate.
Following that guideline helps keep people on board safe.
Children 10 and under must be wearing a life jacket, although it is recommended everyone on board does as well.
In some cases, it’s the difference between life or death.
“Much like a seat belt in an automobile, if something bad happens, you’re prepared,” said Sgt. Alan Gillis of the Maine Warden Service. “To plan on putting a life jacket on after an incident occurs is not a good plan.”
People should also avoid sitting on the sides of the boat.
While there is no speed limit on Maine waters, it always has to be quote “reasonable and prudent.”
