PISCATAQUIS COUNTY – A group of canoeists are safe after they were rescued by game wardens on Ripogenus Lake Friday.
Around 11:40 a.m. Friday morning, dispatchers received a report that two canoes that had overturned with five people in the water.
There were nine people in total, ages 22 to 40, on the excursion in the remote area of Piscataquis County.
Officials say the weather caused dangerous boating conditions, with high winds and white cap waves that were four to six feet high.
The people had been using make-shift sails on the canoes when the wind came up suddenly.
After the incident occurred, they were split up into three separate groups.
Wardens say everyone was accounted for and rescued by about 12:15.
Four people were treated for hypothermia and checked out in a responding ambulance.
All people involved were wearing life jackets.
