WELLS — Police said they confirmed a great white shark sighting in Wells Harbor Thursday.
The great white was spotted off the Wells Harbor bell buoy by beachgoers — then confirmed by the Maine Marine Patrol.
Police said the shark was believed to be about 9 feet long.
Police in Wells and Kennebunkport are telling people not to go farther in the water than their knees until further notice.
“It was very scary to me,” said Shana Malloy, who was at the beach when the shark was spotted.
“Yeah, because the water was packed today and then all of a sudden everybody came out so we knew something was going on and then we heard one of the lifeguards up here say there was a
sighting and it was pretty scary because we had been out swimming in the water all day and there was a sandbar so people were out pretty deep today,” she said.
Thursday’s warning came more than two weeks after a shark killed a woman off Bailey Island — which was the first recorded deadly shark attack in Maine history.
