WATERVILLE – The Waterville fire chief is addressing the controversy surrounding a photo of the department.
The statement comes after a photo of the members of the department in which one of the firefighters seems to be displaying an offensive hand gesture that some say has been tied to white supremacy was posted online,
According to the chief, the firefighter unknowingly made the gesture because he had injured his hand during a routine training.
The chief said other firefighters in the photo were interviewed and they confirmed there was no joke or horseplay associated with the hand placement.
The fire chief also added that if there were any evidence that supported an allegation of “white supremacy” or “racial bias,” the organization would condemn it.
