BANGOR – A local woman recently lost on “Wheel of Fortune” and still won.
“I’d like to solve the puzzle,” Bangor resident and “Wheel of Fortune” contestant Kristen Shaw said during a recent broadcast of the show.
“Say everything, don’t add anything. Go ahead,” warned “Wheel of Fortune” host Pat Sajak.
That is when Shaw solved the four-word puzzle, but she added the word “and,” and it cost her.
“You maybe didn’t even hear yourself say it, but you threw an ‘and’ in there at the last thing and we have to go by the rules,” Sajak told her.
She lost $1,950 and a trip to Nashville.
That would be true, if the story ended there.
“I got a message from L.J. Whalen in Nashville saying the city of Nashville has something they’d like to offer you, which just blew me away,” Shaw said, standing on her doorstep. “He had, you know, gone around to the hospitality in Nashville and they wanted to organize a trip for me, all-inclusive.”
On the future trip to Music City, Shaw plans on taking her mother, Susan, who was also in the audience during her taping of “Wheel of Fortune.”
“I taped this back in October and it aired Thursday night and I woke up Friday morning and people are calling for a rule change,” Shaw said. “It just blew me away because, you know, I knew the rule. You read what’s on the puzzle. You don’t add anything more.”
She doesn’t think a change is needed.
“I disagree with it,” Shaw said. “I appreciate people supporting me, but you know rules are rules. Just because something happens you don’t change the whole face of the show. The show has been on a very long time.”
A California media outlet is reporting the man who did solve the puzzle is saying he’d like to split the winnings with Shaw in the spirit of Thanksgiving.
Shaw did not go home empty-handed.
“I solved the first toss-up of the round, and then I solved one of the triple toss-up as well,” she said. “I still went home with $3,000, which is not a bad payday.”
Another contestant from Maine soon will be on the show.
Janie Lander from Guilford will spin the wheel at 7 pm Thanksgiving evening.
